The traditional Mille Miglia yearly event, that was established as a racing between 1927 and 1957 (with pause during Second World War), took place in Italy last week, between 11th and 15th May. The 2011 edition also commemorated the first victory of a non-Italian driver, Rudolf Caracciola, at Mille Miglia in a Mercedes-Benz SSKL on 13th April 1931. The constructors invited to participate aligned beautiful, classic sports or non-sport cars at the start of the competition; teams had to follow a 1,600 km course on the historic route Brescia - Rome - Brescia. Mercedes-Benz took the challenge with iconic models built in the late 20s and 50s: a 1929 SSK, an SS and a 300 SLR (W 196 R series) - in this last-mentioned car, Juan Manuel Fangio II, nephew of the illustrious Juan Manuel Fangio, and Mika Hakkinen, two-times world champion in Formula 1 with McLaren-Mercedes, paired to follow the trails of Stirling Moss and co-driver Denis Jenkinson, who brought a sensational win for Mercedes-Benz at Mille Miglia back in 1955.
